Organizing Storage Unit: 3 Tips To Easily Find What You're Looking For

About Me
Understanding The Moving Process

A few years ago, I decided that I needed to stop trying to live in a home that I couldn't afford. I was tired of always trying to make the mortgage when I really couldn't afford it anymore. I decided that instead of ignoring the issue, I needed to put my home up for sale and focus on moving and storage. I found a great storage facility where I could stash things that wouldn't fit into my apartment, and I also worked with a great company that offered help with moving. It was amazing to be free of that financial burden. This blog is for anyone wondering about starting over.

Organizing Storage Unit: 3 Tips To Easily Find What You're Looking For

America relies on self storage facilities and units more heavily than any other country, with nearly 9% of Americans owning a self storage unit for personal storage purposes. Self storage units can really help remove clutter in your home and free up space; however, they can also get easily cluttered. You don't want to simply throw everything you own in the unit; otherwise, it'll be difficult to find what you're looking for. Here are 3 tips you should consider to avoid having to dig through mountains of boxes to find what you need.

Keep a Map at the Entrance

In time, it can be difficult to remember where you put what. To make your job a lot easier, make a map of the unit and roughly include the type of items that you stored in certain areas of the unit. For example, you might want to write down that you stored that chinaware set that you've always wanted to use but never had the opportunity in a sealed plastic box behind the couch in the left rear corner of the unit. Keep the map at the entrance. Laminate the map to protect it from dirt and dust.

Stick Banners on the Walls

If you've organized your storage unit in a way that similar items are stored in the same area, you might want to get custom stickers or labels made that you can stick to the walls. If not, you can even make a banner yourself by writing down a specific category, like kitchen appliances or seasonal items, in large letters on a banner. Stick the banner onto the wall closest to where everything is stored. This way, you'll get a good idea of the general area of where you should begin your search.

Clearly Label Content of All Boxes

If you stored everything in transparent sealed plastic boxes, it'll be a lot easier for you to know what the content of each box is; however, if you decided to use cardboard boxes instead, you'll have to open each box. To make your life a lot easier, clearly label the content of each box. Stick the labels on each wall, or at least several walls, of each box. While this may seem tedious at first, it beats having to cut open sealed cardboard boxes and reseal them at a later time.

Conclusion

Moving things into a self storage unit can take a lot of time and work. You need to be prepared and organized, as the last thing you want is to have to dig through mountains of boxes in order to find just one item. It'll not only be a mess, but it'll also take a lot of time. Heed these tips, and searching for what you're looking for will not bring any headaches or stress.
